This week we highlight DAUMOS, an up and coming clothing brand located at 1692A Dorchester Ave, Boston, MA 02124. Originally founded in 2015, DAUMOS is the brainchild of Marisa Babcock (mother) and Adalícia Virginia de Pina (daughter). They are Dorchester residents with a combined 30 years of experience in custom made clothing. DAUMOS, a combination of the words DAUghter and MOther is a high-end cut and sew apparel company that focuses on gala, prom and wedding gowns, as well as African styles of wear.
Both Marisa and Adalicia were exposed to the art of tailoring and sewing, at a very young age. Sewing became Marisa’s passion at the age of 22 when she married Adalicia Farther who was a well renowned tailor in Cabo Verde. Adalícia’s dad was highly influential in her life, he taught her all of his tips and tricks and encouraged her to pursue fashion design as a career choice. Both mother and daughter started designing and making clothes for themselves and their friends as they studied and worked in other career fields.
After participating in several local fashion shows and hosting their own successful fashion show at Lombrados in 2016, and participating in Tiffany’s Fashion Extravaganza, during New York Fashion Week in September 2018, Marisa and Adalicia decided to rekindle the idea of working together in the fashion business. The high demand to design and make clothes led to the creation of DAUMOS Boutique & Atelier in 2018.
When Covid 19 hit they were forced to adapt, spending more time growing their website https://www.daumos.com, social media outreach, Fashion Show organizing and community outreach. It is important for the team at DAUMOS that they give back to the community that has supported them since their inception. Marisa and Adalicia would make over 1000 masks a month that they donated to local hospitals, and nursing homes used to work. They also would go to local senior communities and host classes where they would teach people how to sew as well as how to do more advanced sewing. It’s important for Marisa and Adalicia that they give back to the community that has supported them over the years.
During the shutdown they worked on organizing their recent fashion show at Hibrarian Hall. The Show featured over120 pieces that they collectively made by hand. They called the Collection RISE UP. This collection was inspired by the nature capability of changing and adapting. It’s a tribute to all resilient women that had to overcome so much during this past year, facing the pandemic head on and doing what they do best. It’s a sexy, bold, and provocative collection that explores different body shapes, and aims at striking the balance between commercial and conceptual, as well as classic and avant-garde. Part of this collection was presented at Tiffany’s Fashion Week, during Paris Fashion week.
